Bronx, N.Y., November 24, 2007 – Donn Cabral of Glastonbury, Conn., and Neely Spence of Shippensburg, Pa., won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships (FLCCC) Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., today. Runners enjoyed good race conditions, with clear, sunny skies and a temperature of 37 degrees. The boys' race began with Brandon Jarrett of Hillsborough, N.J., coming out fast, maintaining the lead until Donn Cabral, who was hot on his trail, claimed the lead. As Cabral accelerated his pace, he separated from the pack, keeping approximately a 10-second lead, until he sprinted to finish in first place in 15:09. Cabral broke the Northeast Regional meet record of 15:14, held by Anthony Smith since 1982. Finishing behind Cabral was Mark Dennin, a senior at Boyertown High School, in 15:24 and Brian Leung, a senior from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, in 15:25, respectively. Jarrett, a senior at St. Benedict's Prep, finished eighth in 15:31. The girls' race began with seniors Neely Spence of Shippensburg, Pa., and Carly Seymour of Ebensburg, Pa., in the lead, with a tight pack of ten following close behind. At the half-mile mark, Seymour began to feel ill and dropped back in the race. Spence maintained her lead throughout the race, while Emily Jones (junior) and Mary Kate Champagne (senior) led the secondary pack. Spence, the 2006 FLCCC Northeast Regional Champion, crossed the finish line in 17:37. Jones, a junior at Bromfield High School in Harvard, Mass., took second in 17:41, and Champagne, a senior at Seton Catholic Central High School in Plattsburgh, N.Y., finished third in 17:44. Seymour finished fourth in 17:46. For both Cabral and Spence this marks the second time qualifying for the national championship. The top ten boys and the top ten girls of the seeded races qualified to compete against runners from the three other regional meets in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals, which takes place Saturday, Dec. 8 at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San Diego, Calif.
